One of the things that Filipinos miss the most from their home country is their street snacks. It’s difficult to find authentic street snacks for any kind of cuisine as its flavors are still vastly different. However, Toto’s Grill hits the right spot and creates a sense of nostalgia in a lot of its Filipino customers. It’s a highly recommended restaurant to visit whenever you’re in Hayward as it’s completely unique from any other Filipino restaurant in the area!
Toto’s Grill: Self Serve Selection
The restaurant offers a cafeteria style self-serve, where you fill up your tray with as much (or as little) food as you’d like! Toto’s Grill serves their food on a stick as you have to grill it yourself on their open-fire grills in the middle of the restaurant. They cook the food partially already, but grilling it yourself comes as an experience to the typical Filipino street-style food as well as a way to heat it up and give it an extra crispiness!
Toto’s Grill: Our Recommendation
We recommend getting their chicken BBQ, pork BBQ, hot dogs, fish balls, and Kikiam (fish cakes)! Their Lumpia and Fried Shumai are also common dishes that you can enjoy from the restaurant. These are available if you’re unfamiliar with its other uncommon delicacies.
The Kwek-kwek or Tokneneng is also a good treat as they are. Kwek-kwek is boiled quail and Tokneneng is chicken eggs fried with a seasoned flour-batter. Although the red color on the hot dog or the orange color on the Kwek-kwek and Tokneneng are a bit off-putting, they are still a delicious and simple treat! Don’t forget to ask for some sauce if you’d like to try out dipping sauces with any of their food. We recommend their vinegar mixture for starters!
If you’re feeling adventurous, Toto’s Grill offers a lot of uncommon delicacies that’s difficult to find in any other Filipino restaurant. We highly recommend their Pork Isaw and Tenga, which many Filipino customers enjoy. This is their menu list if you’re looking to visit this restaurant!
